Kevin MacVittie

CTO, Smart Markings Technologies (Skip-Line, Spec-Rite, StencilFast) · Buffalo, New York

Kevin MacVittie is a technology executive working at the intersection of connected hardware, cloud software, and data-driven product innovation. As CTO of Smart Markings Technologies, he leads engineering and technology strategy across a portfolio of market-leading construction-technology companies — including Skip-Line, Spec-Rite, and StencilFast — modernizing how roads get marked, measured, and managed.

He founded and scaled Spec-Rite Online, a connected cloud platform for pavement marking management, from prototype to a profitable SaaS business, and architected the integration between Skip-Line's vehicle-mounted hardware and the cloud — real-time project visualization, fleet telemetry, and automated compliance reporting for contractors and departments of transportation across the U.S., Canada, and ANZ. Along the way he has directed the portfolio's intellectual property program and is a co-author on four issued patents spanning machine vision, geospatial positioning, and automated pavement assessment.

Kevin's path here was unconventional: a PhD in biochemistry from Clarkson University, with 21 peer-reviewed publications in bioelectrochemistry and biochemical computing, before crossing into product development. He co-founded RT Vision Labs, an IoT product consultancy that shipped everything from industrial monitoring fleets to GPS pet wearables, and spent six years as Technology Director at Clarkson's Shipley Center for Innovation, advising more than 130 startups on commercialization.

Beyond the day job he speaks and teaches — a TEDx talk on product development in the IoT age, guest lecturing on applied digitalization at Münster University of Applied Sciences — serves as a Men Wear Pink ambassador for the American Cancer Society, advises founders at UT Austin's Innovation Center, and travels: 31 countries and counting.
